Write the brief before opening catalogs

A search for wholesale products from China can produce thousands of pages, but most will not answer the same question. Create a one-page brief with the product type, intended use, must-have specification, acceptable alternatives, quantity range and target destination.

Brief exampleProduct: heavyweight blank T-shirt · Use: screen printing · Quantity: 120 units · Sizes: S–XL · Required evidence: measurement method, fabric composition, GSM, shrinkage guidance, color options, packed weight · Destination for estimate: country and postcode only

Separate discovery from supplier evidence

Search result

Helps you find a page. It does not establish who supplies the item.

Product catalog

Shows a selection and may include codes or specifications.

Marketplace listing

May show variants, price tiers and seller context on a separate service.

Direct quotation

Answers a particular brief, quantity and date; it still needs identity and term checks.

Build a small shortlist

Choose three to five candidates that appear to match the same brief. Keep the source URL and exact product code. Remove candidates that cannot show the required variant or that answer a different quantity.

A smaller shortlist makes it easier to notice when two pages use the same photos but provide different specifications, or when a low price belongs to a different material.

Compare the same fields

FieldComparable evidence
ItemExact code, material, model and selected variant.
QuantityMOQ and the tier used for the quoted unit price.
Quality evidenceCurrent detail photos, measurements or a sample tied to the same item.
PackingUnits per carton, included boxes and measured or estimated weight.
Cost stageProduct only, packed goods, freight estimate or another clearly named stage.

Use a sample as a decision gate

  1. Confirm the specificationMake sure the sample is the same material, model and construction quoted for the order.
  2. Record what arrivedKeep measurements, photos and any differences from the brief.
  3. Ask what will changeSample packaging or customization may differ from the production order.
  4. Update the comparisonDo not let a good sample erase unanswered MOQ, packing or payment questions.

Keep communication attached to the item

Whether a supplier replies by email, marketplace chat or WhatsApp, save the product code and public source with the answer. A detached screenshot of a price or promise is difficult to verify later. The WhatsApp inquiry guide shows how to keep the conversation answerable.

Stop when the comparison no longer holds

  • The candidate cannot identify the quoted item or variant.
  • MOQ and unit price use different quantity bases.
  • Required measurements or specifications remain unavailable.
  • A sample cannot be tied to the planned production item.
  • Packing and freight assumptions are combined into an unexplained total.
  • The only path forward relies on unsupported identity or payment claims.
